Orginal Post: wolverinex: I understand that this is a rare style to be taught even in the united states. I unfortunatly live far from some of the official schools like takumakai and roppoiken here in NY,but there is one near me but the problem is there is no solid references for this specific teacher or his dojo, his name is Miguel Ibarra and he runs a yamabushi kai daito ryu aikijutsu dojo and I to be quite honest only one person i have spoken to so far has heard of him and the reports on his teaching methods and credentials were uninspiring at best…so if anyone else in this martial art has heard of him and can give me some opinions it would be most helpful thank you

Hm, as I know Miguel Ibarra isnt on the list of licenced Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu teachers. Are you shore that he is licenced for Dairo-ryu Aikijujutsu? Maybe he is licenced for some other branch.>
that is the hyperlink to his website which lists his credentials and backround>
He’s apparently certified under Daito Ryu Bokuyokan founder Katsumi Yonezawa. From the page above it looks like Ibarra is an off-shoot of the Bokuyokan. He probably changed the name to reflect the fact that he combined Miyama-ryu and Daito-ryu concepts.>
They have an online Black Belt course. RUN!!11!!>
Fancy seeing John pellagrini in the photo gallery. Now there’s a man who gets around!
This guy looks good, I don’t see any reason not to go, other than the fact that he may be expensive. Vid isn’t to impressive, but it’s hard to judge anything from that.
He has trained in daito-ryu under ” R. Okabayashi and T. Kawabe, both of whom hold the Kyoju Dairi in Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu.”
” This new name for the organization does not relect a new ryu or system, but rather it serves to emphasize what has become the primary focus of training. That is the training, studying, and teaching of Daiyo-ryu Aikijujutsu.”
I wouldn’t mind checking him out myself if I were ever around there. Let us know if you go.>

Only four organizations that teach Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu are recongnesed by Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu General Headquarter and Katsuyuki Kondo to represending real Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. But it doesnt mean that your diplomas from one organization will worth in other. There organizations are Kodokai, Roppokai, Sagawa and Takumakai. Any other organization is not recognesed and dont have right or licence to teach Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu.>
Which of these four is the founder setsu, or closest to the original?>
Mr. Ibarra is quite famous and controversial. Many see him as a fraud that “bought” his lisence and now bastardizes the art while others do infact accept his credentials. “yamabushi ryu” or “mountain warrior school” a made up name and has no real links to Japan or the original daito-ryu.
The idea of “mixing” a koryu art or with another to make your own or even changing the name sickens me and at the same time makes me suspicious as gaining access as a student to a legitimate koryu budo is very difficult and involves not changing the art/name but rather preserving the ryu as is.
As well, the fact that he sells instruction via video tape is to me the first warning of a money making fraud. I would take a short visit to “e-budo” and do a search on mr. Ibarra as there are folks there that practice certified daito-ryu and can better answer your question.
Quote: Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Yamabushi Kai ia an independent Daito-ryu study group, offering training and rank in a traditional system without the political hinderances or excessive fees.
How can you offer legitimate, recognized rank for a koryu art as an independant organization? He does not want the politics but then read this quote:
Quote: MIGUEL IBARRA, Shihan, 7th Dan, Aikijujitsu. He is a noted Seminar Instructor and the official representative of Takeda Ryu Aikido under Hisashi Nakamura, 10th Dan. He is President of the International Yama Bushi Ryu Federation. He also serves as a member of the Executive Board of the International Karate Kobudo Federation.
Takeda ryu aikido?????? Now this is getting a little silly. A 7th dan BB aikijujutsu (BTW, most aikijujutsu (koryu) groups do not give out gendai budo ranks) representing an aikido group that itself is not recognized by aikikai honbu, yoshinkan honbu or ki no kenkai honbu?
Quote: Miguel Ibarra, Kaiden Shihan and his son SenseiRené Ibarra, Kyoju Dairi are the main instructors at the school. Also the school offers personal fitness training
His son is kyoju dairi? Lots of nice titles for a group not interested in the “Political hinderances”. Personal fitness training? Hee hee, yep, serious budo in the morning, jazzercise in the afternoon.
With all this said, please note that I have no first hand knowledge of mr. ibarra and therefore everything I have written can only be taken as conjecture.
I myself would instead look for a good, legitimate aikido school if in new york, there are some very high level people in the new york area.
The above link will take you to the mainline daito ryu org. in japan, the FAQS are quite good and should answer most questions or at least give you lead into finding the answer.
BTW, After having watched the videos of the instructor in question, I would suggest looking elsewhere, videos are not great representations but can offer some insight when the person in question is supposed to hold the highest credentials available in the art.
Here is his authenticated credentials as web published and authenticated by a third party. Available at aikido journal online.
Quote: IBARRA, MIGUEL A.

You did great work here!
“Which of these four is the founder setsu, or closest to the original?”
They are all orginal. Actualy there are five Daito-ryu organizations.
Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu General Headquarter with Katsuyuki Kondo as main person in it. After Sokaku Takeda, Tokimune Takeda become main person of Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu, after Tokimune Takeda, Katsuyuki Kondo become main person of Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. So Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu General Headquarter is main Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu organization. Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu General Headquarter as main Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu organization recognise four more organizations which teach Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. And these four organizations are Kodokai, Roppokai, Sagawa and Takumakai.
So if you for example practice Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu in Takumakai organization (which was founded by Takuma Hisa who learned Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu directly from Sokaku Takeda) and you come to Katsuyuki Kondo seminar, you may tell that you practice Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu and they will agree to that. If you come to same seminar and tell that you practice Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu in Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Yamabushi Kai organization, they wont recognise it and for them you dont practice Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu.
Also less important many people put title Soke when they are talking about Katsuyuki Kondo. Actualy he is not Soke and in Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu history there was only two Sokes (Sokaku Takeda and Tokimune Takeda), others didnt use that title. So for example Katsuyuki Kondo have titles Somucho and Hombucho “instead” Soke title. Also Katsuyuki Kondo recive Soke Dairi title from Tokimune Takeda.>
