Orginal Post: karateshopma: My sensei teaches Freestyle Karate, with a very strong foundation of traditional Okinawan karate. I hear all you guys (and girls?) talking about seemingly very specific styles and forms. Are there specifics within Okinawan karate like I see everyone talking about or am I completely backwards and confused? Forgive me if its trivial or elementary, Im somewht new to the world of martial arts. Enlighten me, please!

Jason

Hi Jason. Yes, there are many many different styles and schools within Okinawan karate. Almost all stem from the three main schools of tode or toudi (the original Okinawan name for karate): naha-te, shuri-te and tomari-te. However, they has been so much seperation and integration over the years that there are now many more ryuha.

If you’re looking for more detailed info, an excellent intro to the subject is Mark Bishop’s book Okinawan Karate ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0804832056/qid=1116826709/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/103-8066889-3832629?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 ). It covers all the main styles (and some minor ones) as well as the most important teachers and their methods.>
