This is a technique that’s “adapted” by Koga ryu ninjutsu from European fencing. It’s been slightly modified through the years and is used to defeat those who practice traditional japanese sword arts. It’s used to intercept swordsmen who use more traditional stances. Remember to destroy your opponent’s balance/composure/life? first w/ multiply shuriken and knives.
-First rule of ninjutsu: Deception. Always show that you’re weaker than you are. Act like you have a limp etc. Act slow; anything to take the opponent off guard before your throwing weapons and your strike destroys him.
-Unlike in fencing, you Do Not lunge to the full extent of your capability. Lunging fully extended leaves you immobile for a split second as you’re planted firmly on the ground.
-The knife (or dagger) is there as a follow up or as a parrying tool for counter attacks; also as an additional weapon to throw before the lunge.
-Be ready for counter attacks.
-Targets for the lunge are the lead leg, the neck, the heart, the solar plexus, the groin, the arm.
-Commit yourself fully (strength-wise) to the strike and aim to kill. Do not over commit.
-Beware of counter attacks from the niten-ryu school however as they’re skilled with using a weapon in each hand.
-Timing, timing, timing. In each traditional sword art is a key to unlock and pre-empt their moves. Study their movements closely paying close attention to their legs ,shoulders and feet.
**Key Point: When ‘sparring’ or testing your skills out against a kendo practitioner for example, deception is critical. (Eg. hold the bokken with two hands until you execute a decisive lunge.)
