Rafael Formiga Barbosa shows what to do when a wrestler puts a ton of pressure on you in your Butterfly Guard.  This is a common problem for smaller grapplers or when dealing with a strong aggressive wrestlers.  Formiga is a master of the butterfly guard and knows how to deal with opponents who try to smash his guard and drive a lot of pressure into his head.

Formiga uses his hips to get offline, and create small openings to get the sweep.  One of the most important details is keeping the knee up in butterfly guard and blocking your opponent from stepping over the knee.  Formiga ensures that he keeps tight and connected to his opponent.

If you’ve ever rolled with Formiga, you’ll notice that he is a master of off-balancing in the butterfly guard and creating simple, small opportunities to guard sweep and come up on top.
